Great Bike overall. I went from a 1988 Honda Nighthawk (3 years), to a Harley Customized Sportster (2 years), to a very fast 1993 GSXR-1100W (3 years), to now an all around sportbike/sporttourer 2001 BMWK1200RS (so far 1.5 years and counting). On the GSXR I went fast, Loved to go fast, did not like to be passed on any street. So when I went shopping around for a new bike, I needed to go fast, but also be more comfy for the long drives than the GSXR. I went to the Suzuki shop, the all three in one shop, Hahonda, Yamahaha, Kawasucky shop. None would make me happy in comfort and style and speed. I then went to the BMW shop and saw the K1200RS and fell in love. My wife had saw it and fell in love with it to. My wife had conditions though, one was a backrest and the other was saddle bags and third was I could not ride without her unless she had other plans :). I got great financing on the deal so I got it.

The first few rides were different as I was getting used to the way it rode. The bike is a little heavier than that the GSXR and the riding style is different. I also had to break it in properly, so I didn’t ride it hard for 800 miles or so. After break in, I let er rip.

This thing is amazing. I would be in a full lean in a corner and hit a bump or hit the brakes and this this holds its line great, the bike just goes over bumps like if they are not even there. The suspension is incredible. A lot of the what this bike can do also is do to my riding abilities. I love to ride and push this bike to its full potential(sp). It will do 148 MPH. It hits 143 and then creeps up to about 148, but thats all this bike will do. It will take a corner harder and faster than you think it will. It gets a little heavy after long hard riding in the twisties, but you just have to stop and stretch your wrists. You probable wont ride the bike as hard as I do, so for the most part the bike will do what you want it to do for you.

The anti-lock brakes work great, I was riding and in a full lean, racing these guys who thought their 600’s could out run me, and this corner came up going the opposite direction that I was going, I pulled the handlebars hard and had to hit the brakes hard. I didn’t even know the antilocks where kickin’ in, but I could hear them. On any other bike with out anti-locks, I would of wrecked. The anti-lock brakes saved me and my bike from pain and suffering. For regular stops, the brakes seem like they wont stop you in time, but they do the job.

As far as power goes, I can never have enough. They say it 130HP rear wheel, but with the weight of this this, and the drive shaft, you can’t tell. At least if you are coming from a bored out 148HP GSXR that is. Its probably fast enough for you though. The drive shaft seems to take a little of the quickness out of it. Don’t get me wrong though, this is a very fast bike, or I would not of got it. It seem like 0-60 is about 3.5 seconds, it should do the quarter mile in about 12.5 or faster. (These numbers based on experience riding, not on tested time tables). I am going to be getting the pipe and chip for this bike as soon as the warranty expires :). Stock pipe weights about 33LBS and the after market weighs only 12LBS. Big change.

The comfort factor is great, again coming off of a GSXR, anythings better comfort than that. The model I got has the both adjustable handle bars and footpegs. I rode at first with the handlebars in the closest position to me and the footpegs at there lowest. Very great for straight a ways and long drives, but ground clearance in the hard twisties is not that great with the pegs on the low setting. I now ride with them in the upper position only, do to the way I ride. As far as the handlebar position goes, I have tried them in the full forward sport riding position and the close to me touring position, and I cant tell either way that one is better than the other for going fast. So I ride with the handlebars in the closest, most upright position. The bike still handles great. The seat is fine with me also. It also can adjust between a normal ridding position and a higher riding position. I ride in the higher position because I have the footpegs in the higher position and it makes it a little less bending on the knees. Great under the seat storage in the seat. As far as the passengers comfort, My wife has never complained, now that I got her the after market (Pirates Lair) back rest, a must have for the wife. It uses the saddlebag plastic holders that hold the saddlebags and the touring rack to hold the backrest.

The windshield is a little short for the tall people. I am 6′ 0″ and the wind hits me right in the forehead. With the windshield in the up position, it is even worse. I have to duck down and then its great, no wind at all.

The heated hand-grips are great. Not much to say about em. When its cold I crank em on high until my hands get a little toasty, then all you need is the low settings, unless your in a ice storm. Highs will burn you up. But thats good.

The only couple of things I would change on this bike is, the weight, there has to be a way to make this this lighter. Too much weight to throw around in the heavy twisties. And the steering dampener, again in the heavy twisties, it could use a stiffer dampener. Or at least be able to adjust it. You would of thought that for the price you pay, you would get a adjustable dampener.
