Those who attended the Legend of the Motorcycle Invitational Concours d’ Elegance this past weekend at the five-star Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay near San Francisco may have caught sight of, or even spoken with, Pierre Terblanche. In a rare visit to the U.S., the Ducati designer was in Northern California for the spectacular second-annual event, which also served as the stateside unveiling for the production version of his most recent work, the 2008 Hypermotard 1100.

I didn’t make it to Half Moon Bay, but I spent three days last month at the Ducati factory in Bologna, Italy, with the always-entertaining Terblanche, company president Federico Minoli, creative director David Gross (whose book, Fast Company: A Memoir of Life, Love and Motorcycles in Italy, is due out later this month), product general manager Claudio Domenicali, project engineer Federico Sabbioni, and PR men Massimo Davoli and John Paolo Canton. Despite the brevity of my visit, I learned a lot.

Bologna briefing: Ducati designer Pierre Terblanche (left) gives CW Managing Editor Matthew Miles the lowdown on the Hypermotard outside the factory in Italy.
Equally important, I was able to ride a Hypermotard prototype—actually, two prototypes, one for a street impression and another strictly for photos.

Not familiar with this monster motard? Here’s the short version: Terblanche pitched management on “an extreme streetfighter—street performance in a new aesthetic package” in the spring of 2005. The concept bike debuted that fall in Milan. “It was a showbike, Ducati-style,” Terblanche told me, “which means it was a production bike we put on show. It was meant to be produce-able straightaway.” Based on the hugely positive reaction the bike received from motorcyclists not only at the show but around the world, Minoli green-lighted the project immediately.

Similar in many respects—steering geometry, wheelbase, seat height and suspension travel—to the CW Ten Best-winning Multistrada, the Hypermotard has changed little since its first appearance. The LED front turn indicators were relocated from the backs of the folding, handlebar-end-mounted mirrors to the neighboring handguards; the wide, tubular handlebar was raised; the gas tank was widened by half an inch to allow a fuel capacity of nearly 3.3 gallons; the single 320mm front brake rotor was replaced with a pair of 305mm semi-floating discs; and the taillight was mounted higher to meet homologation standards. That’s pretty much it.

Blast on a backroad: Mix-n-match prototype wore black plastic and S-spec brakes, suspension, wheels and tires. Engine performance was excellent, handling superb.
As its name suggests, the 1100 is powered by the latest version of Ducati’s venerable air-cooled, fuel-injected, two-valve-per-cylinder, desmo V-Twin. Now displacing 1078cc, up from 992cc, the engine produces a claimed 90 horsepower (down 5 hp from the Multistrada 1100) and 76 foot-pounds of torque. Dry weight is said to be 390 pounds. The standard model retails for $11,495, while the S version, with its diamond-like carbon fork coating, reservoir-equipped Öhlins shock, monobloc Brembo brake calipers, red-pinstriped forged Marchesini wheels and Z-rated Pirelli Diablo Corsa III radials, goes for $13,995.

In actual use on the road, the S-spec prototype felt more powerful and lighter than the spec sheet suggests. The seating position is far forward, as on a dirtbike, yet wheelies come easily. Owing to its perfect primary balance, the 90-degree engine is very smooth, and throttle response is spot-on. The broad handlebar made for immediate directional changes, and the radial-mount Brembos were powerful and progressive. While the easily adjustable mirrors can be relocated atop the handlebar, I think such surgery is unwarranted; they worked beautifully.
