2008 Yamaha R1

Whilst being more vicious than the rest, it left the 143 horsepower 1998 Kawasaki ZX-9R for dead. Honda and Suzuki were nowhere near and got caught with their pants down. It took 3 full years for the others to catch up and only Suzuki managed to keep up with the all new GSX-R1000 in 2001. Without the R1 we wouldn’t have had the big Gixxer so soon.

So Yamaha upped the ante and the others followed as the Japanese always do.
Therefore, we believe that Yamaha will launch an all new blazing R1 in 2008. Then most likely the biggest R6 update since 2006 in 2009 when the R6 turns 10. Good times for Yamaha right now, Vmax, R-series 10 years, Rossi is winning again and the Tenere have been relaunched.

Still, nothing will grab peoples imagination as much as the prospect of an all new R1. We believe that Yamaha will go for the big power again with all the technology available.

The 2009 R1 should boast of at least 190hp with an improved ram-air intake and larger air box. Being Yamaha, we can expect a higher rev ceiling and to keep noise levels down and improve mass centralisation a new exhaust should be in place.
We have gone for a little bit of R6, a little bit of R1 and a little bit of F1 in our 2009 R1 styling concept.
This could be Yamaha’s M1 for the street competing with Ducati’s Desmosedici for people’s imaginations.

Yamaha have released these pictures of the 2008 R1 and while there seem to be no radical changes, the new R1 paintjobs looks hot! Last year, Yamaha had introduced some radical technology on the R1, including the much-hyped Yamaha Chip-Controlled Intake (YCC-I), a variable length air intake system that boosts power at high revs, and the sophisticated YCC-T fly-by-wire throttle control system. Taking a break from 20 years of using five-valve cylinder heads, the bike had also been given four-valve cylinder heads with intake valves made of titanium.

We still don’t have information on what tech changes have been implemented on the 2008 R1, but if at all any changes have been made to the engine, chassis or suspension, we expect those to be relatively minor. More details as they become available…

An all-new YZF-R1 for the 2007 model year was announced on 9 October, 2006. Key features include an all-new inline four-cylinder engine; going back to a more conventional 4-valve per cylinder rather than Yamaha’s trade mark 5-valve genesis layout. Other new features are the Yamaha Chip Control Intake (YCC-I) electronic variable-length intake funnel system, Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T) fly-by-wire throttle system, slipper-type clutch, all-new aluminum Deltabox frame and swingarm, six-piston radial-mount front brake calipers with 310 mm discs, a wider radiator, and M1 styling on the new large ram-air ports in the front fairing. 2008 brought BNG and the ability to buy limited edition Fiat plastics.
